One of the detriments of working in a corporate environment is that sometimes you have Windows security updates forced upon you at rather inconvenient times. For me, it’s usually right in the middle of fixing a hot problem, this Dialog Box From Hell pops up in your face:

A few years ago, I was very heavy into the Windows XP GUI mod community. There was one thing I always wanted to do and that’s create a translucent Command Prompt like you can do in Mac OS X. The problem was that there was no perfect way to do it. The one mod that did allow you to was very limited in what it was capable of doing. I even tried writing one myself which I could never get working properly.

Computer failures usually don’t happen often, but when they do, most people don’t know how to fix them. This happened to my mom a few months back; she was doing a Mac OS X update when she had a power failure. The updater was updating her browser at the time, so when the power came back on and she rebooted her system, she didn’t have a browser. Without a browser, there was no way to download it again.
