Record Store Day, 2010

It’s humorous in a way that there’d be a day dedicated to a music format that was proclaimed dead about once a year since the release of compact discs in 1982. Record Store Day was one group’s vision of keeping local stores in business when they were up against giants like Best Buy and WalMart. Rather than deal with clerks in big stores that knew nothing about what they were selling, they wanted to bring back the days of when going to a record store was more than just buying the latest record, it was a group experience.

Classic arcade characters invade New York City

In a reversal of the movie Tron, videogame characters burst out of an abandoned TV set and wreak havoc in New York City. “Pixels” by Patrick Jean, done as a promotion for onemoreprod.com, masterfully integrates CGI with on-site footage, showing what would happen if those little critters we killed in the arcades took their revenge on us.

Desert island arcade machines

I don’t know how many people remember the glory days of arcades, but those hours spent in a dark building with nothing but the sounds of the arcade machines, Journey on the tinny sound system, and the glow of the CRTs was definitely one of the best times of gaming history.
