Boldy Going Back?
News is spreading that CBS may finally be creating HD versions of the Star Trek: The Next Generation episodes. Here’s the relevant info from Digital Bits:
Multiple sources I spoke with at Comic-Con have also confirmed our report from earlier this year that CBS is hard at work on Star Trek: The Next Generation – Remastered for Blu-ray release starting sometime in 2012. The latest word is that 4 test episodes are currently being worked on for release as a sampler/demo BD disc of the project, and that sampler disc will somehow be available to fans by the end of this year.
Since the original Star Trek series was remastered and revamped a few years ago, there has been a clamor for CBS to give the same treatment to The Next Generation. One of the biggest hurdles in getting TNG the HD upgrade has been the fact that although the series was shot in 35mm, the special effects were done on video – and there is no way to upgrade video once it is rendered to tape. Since classic Trek’s remaster saw the series get all new digital effects, replacing the old shots, the question now is will TNG get the same? Seems to me if CBS is announcing some test episodes, they’ve decided to do just that, and we’ll see all-new digital shots of the Enterprise-D, and other Next-Gen ships, anamolies, spacial rifts, and more.
