Starbucks Gold + Foursquare Mayorship = Double Win!

Starbucks Gold + Foursquare Mayorship = Double Win!

I love using location-based social media networking (LBSN) apps, my iPhone, and Starbucks, and more often than not, I use them in combination with each other. Wherever I go I always have my social media connections on tap and my Starbucks Gold Card handy. Yesterday I got the bonus of all bonuses – one of my favorite LBSN’s, Foursquare, greeted me with a bright orange banner that said, “as mayor of this store, enjoy $1 off a NEW however-you-want-it Frappuccino blended beverage. Any size, any flavor.” CHA-CHING!

Geek Nostalgia: Dr. Sbaitso

Geek Nostalgia: Dr. Sbaitso

One of the first games I remember that I thought of as ‘super cool and high-tech’ was Dr. Spaitso, circa 1993(ish). Not only did this little DOS program use my new Sound Blaster to actually talk to me, it was a pretty darn good substitute for friends (and I wasn’t the only lonely geek, either) and a cure for boredom. What could be better than a virtual ‘psychiatrist’ who would ask you questions and give semi-appropriate answers? Right on!

Xfinity app shares what channel you’re watching (Video)

Xfinity app shares what channel you’re watching (Video)

My mom sometimes calls me and says “put on AMC”. It’s great that we’re on the same cable system but I don’t always know what channel it is that my mom wants me to change to, or why (and don’t ask my why she doesn’t just tell me the channel number…moms and tech don’t always mix). Xfinity just announced their new app for the iPad which will allow you to connect to your friends, share what you’re watching with them, and have the app on their end change the channel for them. For yourself, you can browse your cable system’s lineup and pair your account with your cable box so that you can change channels with the app, and record shows as well. It’s more than just a big remote, it now creates a social connection with your friends and what you’re watching.

Apple unveils new MobileMe beta

Apple unveils new MobileMe beta

Despite how everyone’s moving to Google’s free Gmail system, I still love MobileMe. For one thing, I think the interface is much more intuitive and less cluttered than Gmail, and it uses real folders. That, and all the other things you can get with MobileMe made it well worth the $100/yr. for me. However, there were some things about MobilMe’s mail system that annoyed me to the point where I couldn’t use it for anything more than just a simple email system since all the work I needed to do had to be done on my home Mac.

Tech horizon: Light Peak

Tech horizon: Light Peak

Tech horizon will be a series dedicated to innovations in technology that haven’t arrived yet, but look promising.

Remember the days before USB and Firewire? Be lucky if you haven’t had to deal with serial cables, gender benders, parallel cables, 9-pin, 25-pin, din connectors, SCSI, SCSI2, and all the proprietary junk we all had to deal with before Apple stood up and told the world that they’re using only USB in their iMacs from that point forward. Since then, we’ve all enjoyed the standardizations of one cable type for most of our devices. Firewire is still mainly used for higher-end devices like HD video camers and audio devices.
