Following the red brick road
Everyone knows the story of the Wizard of Oz. In the beginning of the story, Dorothy is told to follow the yellow brick road. At the end of the road she’ll arrive at the Emerald City where the great Wizard of Oz resides, and will grant her the wish to send her home.
There’s one thing I always wondered, and that’s where the red brick road goes. Nobody mentions it, nobody looks at it, but it’s there intertwined with the start of the yellow brick road, like a Technicolor ying and yang. If the yellow brick road takes you to where your wishes are granted, then the red brick road should take you someplace that might not be as pleasant. It isn’t necessarily a dark or scary place, but it’s where I’m sure it will take hard work to get what you want.

That’s where this web site comes in. This is my red brick road. I chose this road for two reasons. First, this isn’t a fairy tale. My wish of the web site I’ve wanted to create for almost ten years isn’t going to happen by talking to the great Wizard. Second, because I believe that although some things are out of our grasp, for the most part people can achieve what they want. I chose to take the harder route at getting this site done.
As with every story like this, the protagonist meets people along the way. It’s usually by accident, like finding a talking scarecrow or a rusted tin man. In my case, it was an auburn long-haired girl on the internet named Krissi. Over time we talked a lot about this site, and what it could become. We threw a lot of ideas around and brainstormed the hell out of this site. What you’re seeing is the result. There are still some rough edges to fix, but we’re confident in bringing something to you that will help you, make you think, and maybe make you laugh once in a while.
What we hope to bring to you is a site that celebrates life in the era of the 21st century. Technology and culture change so rapidly now that it’s almost like being in a tornado. We want to pull you out of it, without landing your house on someone’s sister. We’re not going to regurgitate the news, we’ll tell you what significance it has to you and the community.
I’m sure some of you may ask why we don’t open the site with something big like a 12-page review of Avatar, or our theories on the Apple tablet. These things will come in time, but this first article is to show that there’s a human side to it all. It’s not just about gigaflops and gigawatts, it’s about what it means to us.
Now that’s a site of a different color.
